World Series of Poker Europe 2012 Begins Today

For the second time in its six year history, the World Series of Poker Europe will be staged in Cannes, France. The WSOPE starts today and continues until October 4th. Seven bracelets will be awarded and millions of euros will be up for grabs. Of course, there will also be non-stop cash game action as well as satellites and dozens of other poker tournaments for actions junkies and those players who bust out of the featured events early.

Last year’s WSOPE Main Event champion Elio Fox will be in attendance to defend his title and it’s safe to assume that the four other former WSOPE Main Event champions Annette Obrestad (2007), John Juanda (2008), Barry Shulman (2009), and James Bord (2010) will also be at the felt in Cannes. Here’s a rundown of the bracelet events that will be staged, courtesy of WSOP.com:

WSOPE Schedule

Player of the Year TBD

This year’s WSOPE will also finalize the standings and winner in the Player of the Year race, which is currently led by Phil Ivey. Greg Merson is guaranteed to surpass Ivey’s current point total based on his eventual finish in the WSOP Main Event final table when it resumes in October and could lock it up with a win. Nonetheless, any of the current top 10 players, with a strong performance at the WSOPE, has a reasonable shot at claiming the Player of the Year Title. Notable names still in contention besides Ivey include Michael “the Grinder” Mizrachi and Phil Hellmuth, each of whom will be gunning for their second bracelet of 2012.

Cardplayer Lifestyle will be monitoring the developments throughout the WSOPE and will bring you any major news and/or updates. Lastly, just a couple words of advice if you’re planning on playing:

  • If you’re not an EU citizen, be sure to take your passport with you to the venues (the Majestic Barrière Cannes and the Le Croisette Casino Barrière).
  • All tournament buy ins and payouts must be processed at the casino while the events themselves will be played in the hotel; they’re about 300 yards away from one another.
