Interview with PartyPoker Team Member Barry Carter
What makes the PartyPoker Tour different from other circuits?
I always come at these things from the perspective of satellite winners, and this is where I think the tour excels. The satellites themselves are good value, but the events have lots of things that make satellite winners stick around. There are added-value prizes for a lot of the tournaments. For example, when everyone registers, they get a free spin of a wheel to win further tournament tickets, and the event I won last month even gave away a £1,000 High Roller seat in a raffle.
There are also added-value promos for the satellites themselves. This month, we have several £3,000 freerolls to win Birmingham tickets, for example. A real gripe of mine is when satellite winners get stuck somewhere they don’t know and are priced out of the side of events, but that doesn’t happen with the PartyPoker Tour. The side events are varied and affordable. You simply don’t get to play mixed game formats like Big O, Tennessee Hold’em, Sviten Special and HORSE in the UK, but you can for about £60 on this tour. Finally, all the destinations are in places where you would stay around and have a drink after you bust, which is great because at the following stop, you’ll know a bunch of people.
One of the circuit’s slogans is “Player First”. How important do you think that is?
I think there has been too much emphasis on getting the biggest numbers and lots of re-entries in recent years with other tours. It’s early days, but lots of players who played the first leg in London came to Manchester and Glasgow, which to me says the people valued the experience as much as the poker results. Also, your money is safe at PartyPoker, which in 2025 is perhaps the most important thing for players. Game integrity is key.
Really, though, I always go back to the satellites. We have tons of satellites running around the clock, including for the side events. We forget just how important satellites were for getting new players to the tables, and PartyPoker have made this a priority.
There will be several games for players to enjoy, including a Pub Quiz and a Sports Betting tournament. Which one are you most excited to participate in?
The Pub Quiz; it’s a very British thing, and it is a secret passion of mine. In the U.K., we have a lot of great game shows (The Chase, House of Games, Only Connect) that I watch religiously and have tried to be on. I may not have an edge in the Main Event, but I’d take side action on me in a quiz if enough questions about The Simpsons and Marvel movies come up.
There will also be an ambassador and influencer Sit & Go. Do you think you have a chance to win it?
There is always a chance, but the real thing to bet on is if I can behave on stream. I’ve played two so far, been told not to swear on the stream both times, and swore within 10 minutes each time. They really do play like a home game, so if anyone ever wanted to see me get fired by PartyPoker in real time, tune in.
There will be a large number of online satellites. Do you have any tips for playing them besides reading your book? What do you think are the most common mistakes people make in satellite games?
The satellites we run are phase tournaments, which means you carry your stack from the last one into the next one. The biggest mistake players make in these is treating the end of one phase like the end of a regular satellite, and they play too tight, like it’s a bubble. In reality, there is no difference between the final hand of Phase 1 and the first hand of Phase 2, but nobody plays that way. The fun thing about our satellites is that you have to qualify for the final direct phase; you cannot buy in direct or late register it. That means that tough satellite grinders will be put off playing, and there is a greater chance that recreational players will win packages.
Many amateur players will qualify online and be playing in their first live tournament. What recommendations would you give them?
I always say just pay attention to the dealer; you avoid so many newbie mistakes if you just patiently wait your turn and wait for the dealer to tell you your options. Also, don’t be shy about telling people it’s your first live tournament. Most players are very welcoming in these situations and will give you advice; it really is not as cutthroat as new players imagine.
Last month you won your first tournament at the PartyPoker Tour in Glasgow. What was that experience like?
It was my favourite poker memory. I have won hundreds of online tournaments for much bigger prizes, but as rational as I am, I genuinely started to think I was cursed live. To win it on the PartyPoker Tour meant that all my friends were there to rail me and take that winner picture with me at the end, which meant more to me than the money. Also, we got pretty drunk.
You won two trophies at the recent Global Poker Awards. What did they mean to you?
Prior to my poker win in Glasgow, I thought I was going to have a trophy-less existence, and now I have three. I actually have a reason to buy a (small) trophy cabinet. It was lovely that my work with Dara O’Kearney was recognised because he and I have done so much together, and I genuinely think we have put out some of the best written content of the last five or so years. The Twitter award, however, was very special, in part because I don’t really get paid for it; in fact, I think my jokes have hurt my career with a few potential employers, so I’d better get a bloody trophy for it at least.
What’s the best and worst thing about Poker Twitter?
I obviously love the short form content aspect because that is kinda my thing. The best thing is it is a great place to mobilise. If a big story breaks in poker, that is where we all go. The worst thing? Come on, you know the worst thing; it’s so very toxic. I try my best to be a silly non-partisan guy on there, giving everyone a giggle as a palate cleanser while they otherwise try to get each other cancelled. Having said that, I have started posting my memes on Instagram if people prefer that platform, which includes added dog pictures.
