2024 WPT Playground Preview

Back in May, the World Poker Tour visited Canada with the WPT Montreal festival and starting tomorrow it will return once again for for a second visit to Quebec with the WPT Playground, whose festival will be played from October 14 to 30 at the famous Playground Poker Club in Kahnawake.

“It was such a pleasure hosting a WPT Championship festival at Playground back in May, that we embraced the idea of returning for a second 2024 showing”, said WPT CEO Adam Pliska. “Players will once again have a chance at three different WPT titles, including the most prestigious honor of being immortalized on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup”.

The 2024 WPT Playground will feature the World Poker Tour’s biggest events: the WPT500, the popular WPT Prime and the prestigious WPT Championship, where the champion will be able to add their name to the Mike Sexton Champions Cup. There will also be a Meet Up Game featuring Brad Owen, Xuan Liu and Patrick Tardif.

“I am thrilled to announce our excitement for the upcoming WPT Playground event this October”, said Playground’s Vice President of Gaming Operations Ryan Bevens. “Playground has always been a place where history is made with the WPT, and we are eager to continue this tradition as we welcome back the World Poker Tour. These will be the highlights of the festival:

  • WPT 500 Playground: From October 14th to 21st. Buy-In: CAD$ 590. Guaranteed: CAD$ 400,000.
  • WPT Prime Playground: From October 20th to 25th. Buy-In: CAD$ 1,150. Guaranteed: CAD$ 800,000.
  • WPT Meet Up Game: October 21th.
  • WPT Playground: From October 24th to 30th. Buy-In: CAD$ 3,500. Guaranteed: CAD$ 1,500,000.

2024 WPT Playground

The 2024 WPT Playground Championship

The festival’s biggest tournament kicks off on Thursday, October 24 with three starting flights and a massive CAD$1,500,000 guaranteed prize pool.

Schedule: 

  • Day 1A: Thursday, October 24th at 11 AM (10 levels)
  • Day 1B: Friday, October 25th at 11 AM (10 levels)
  • Day 1C: Saturday, October 26th at 11 AM (10 levels)
  • Day 2: Sunday, October 27th at 11 AM (10 levels)
  • Day 3: Monday, October 28th at 11 AM (until final table)
  • Day 4: Wednesday, October 30th at 11 AM (final table)

Structure: 

  • Buy-In: CAD$ 3,500
  • Re-entry: Unlimited
  • Starting Stack: 50,000
  • Blind Levels: 60 minutes on Day 1, 2 and 3, 90 minutes on Day 4
  • First Level: 100/200 with 200 Big Blind Ante
  • Action Clock: Will be used after level 16 on Day 2
  • Guaranteed Prize Pool: CAD$ 1,500,000
  • Late Registration: Start of Day 2
  • Payouts: 12,5%

The 2024 WPT Playground Festival

The 2024 WPT Playground festival will feature 18 events with buy-ins ranging from CAD$250 to CAD$10,500 for the High Roller. All tournaments except the High Roller will have a guaranteed prize pool, totaling CAD$3,230,000 in guaranteed prizes. Milestone-format satellites will also be played for the WPT Prime, WPT Championship and High Roller.

The 2024 WPT Playground Meet Up Game

On Monday, October 21st, starting at 1 PM, a Meet Up Game will begin, featuring WPT Ambassadors Brad Owen, Xuan Liu and Patrick Tardif who will rotate through the tables every 30 minutes. Three-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Kessel, the new WPT Global ambassador, will likely also be in attendance. There will be a total of 40 tables where $1/$3 and $2/$5 games will be played. To participate, players can sign up through the Poker Atlas app, on the Playground website, or with in-person registration at Playground.

Those who have the opportunity to play online on the WPT Global platform can take advantage of the step-format satellites that will be held for the WPT500 and the WPT Prime events.

2024 WPT Playground

The 2024 WPT Montreal champions

The 2024 WPT Montreal festival (highlights here) was played from May 9-22 at Playground Poker Club. The WPT Prime event was the biggest event of the festival with 1,291 C$ 1K entries and C$ 1,2M in prizes. The champion was local Jikai Zhang, who took home C$ 165K ($120K). The WPT Montreal Championship had 882 entries and C$ 2,8M in prizes. The big winner was Canadian David Dongwoo Ko, who earned a career-high C$ 434K ($319K).
