The New 2010 World Poker Tour Champion: David Williams

Remember David Williams? Probably best known for his 2nd place finish in the World Series of Poker to Greg Raymer in 2004, for the last few years David Williams has been “a name player” without too much else standing out on his poker resume. Not that I feel bad for him – a $3.5 million win at the WSOP SHOULD last you a long time.

Anyhow, the name David Williams is once again on people’s lips, as this week he took down an almost 200-player field at the annual $25,000 buy-in WPT Championships for a score of [...]

Daniel Negreanu Buys In to HSP’s Last Season 6 Session for $341,000

So why is this headline interesting you ask? I find it amazing that Daniel Negreanu bought in for $341,000 after all the ups and downs he had the previous session – he’s stuck just $5,000 after the whole roller coaster ride (but over $150,000 since the start of this High Stakes Poker season). In general, since he’s such a popular figure in poker, I guess most casual poker fans expect him to be a big winner on High Stakes Poker (his history of bad luck on the show notwithstanding).

Indeed, Negreanu still is a top player, but his specialty [...]

High Stakes Poker Season 6 Episode 10 Recap

I love how the episode starts out with Gabe Kaplan’s commentary about Shabbat dinner at Eli Elezra’s house. As a proud member of “the tribe” myself, it’s always funny to hear other Jews make fun of themselves. Sure, I’d play poker with my friends too instead of having a Shabbat dinner with my kids, LOL, why not?!

Great 1st hand – finally Daniel gets the best of Dwan…calling and betting with “air” of his own into Dwan’s “worse air”. Amazing that Daniel just won a $100k+ pot with just Jack high when you consider [...]

High Stakes Poker Season 6 Episode 9 recap

Disclaimer: This episode was far more notable for being “laugh out loud” hilarious, rather than for its poker play. We’ll try to get some poker commentary in here, but it’s impossible to write about what happened without focusing on some of the episode’s funnier moments. Also want to shout out to Gabe Kaplan – Mr. Kotter, you’re freaking hilarious!!! I hope you stay on this show forever!

The first notable hand is Negreanu vs. Doyle. Negreanu manages to win with a pair of 2s. The laughs begin when Doyle says: “nice play Doyle” while [...]

Isildur a No-show

As mentioned in a recent blog post, the world has been waiting for Isildur1’s live poker debut with nothing less than bated breath. To the many eager eyes, however, Mr. Isildur1 has backed out of his scheduled appearance at PartyPoker’s Big Game IV in London, which is to take place today at Les Ambassadeurs hotel. Despite the best efforts of the event’s promoter, Tony G., which reportedly included an offer to let Isildur1 remain masked during poker play, Isildur1 apparently didn’t want to expose his face to the public (talk about a tight image!).

So [...]

High Stakes Poker Season 6 Episode 8 Recap

I was happy to hear at the show’s outset that the group of players will be changing again; it’s time for some new blood.

As regular readers know by now, I’m a devout Daniel Negreanu fan, so admittedly, it’s nice to see Negreanu pick off Lex Veldhuis in the first hand. I’m looking for Daniel, the small-ball expert, to try and build up his stack a bit at a time and recover from the brutal beating he’s taking at Tom Dwan’s hands.

Moving on, Dennis Phillips picks up JJ against Tom Dwan and just [...]
