The first hand of this episode was interesting. On the one hand you get a “disciplined” laydown by Daniel Negreanu, who folded QQ when an ace hit the flop. His laydown was disciplined because you can understand his reluctance to risk his last $50,000 versus 4 opponents, one of who, statistically, was likely to have paired the ace. No surprise to me that Phil Ivey is up over a quarter-million dollars at this table. He pulled off a huge bluff by betting pre- and post-flop with 2-7, no draw, and simply no chance to win the pot. Taking down a hand like this is what makes him the best player in the world. NBC Heads Up Poker Tournament Recap
As our pre-event column predicted, this year’s NBC Heads Up National Poker Championship sure was entertaining! Weeee! I want to start out by saying that I LOVE Antonio Esfandiari! While not as big of a name as Hellmuth, Ivey, or Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari’s mere presence at a poker table makes the whole atmosphere loads more festive. Even if he’s not actively involved in a hand, a simple “weeee” by Antonio never fails to get a laugh out of me, and often other players at the table.
